The Kids Grow So Fast

School is back in session or starting very soon at area schools. Please be on the lookout for buses and kids making their way to class. Seeing all of those buses on the road this morning took me on a trip down memory lane to a time when I was starting school after summer break. Thinking about how things have changed over the years made me think about my grandchildren.

Kids grow up so fast. My grandma used to tell me she was going to put a brick on my head if I didn’t slow down. I thought she was silly at the time, but I completely understand what she was saying now that I have grandchildren of my own.

My eldest grandchild is starting fourth grade. He’s ten years old! It’s so difficult for me to wrap my mind around that fact. Paw Patrol is no longer worthy of his attention. I long for the days when all he wanted to talk about was Cat Boy. He has recently become quite a soccer fan. His first season wasn’t even finished when he started talking about the next.

My middle grandchild is nine and started third grade today. Her mom sent me her first day of school picture, and all I could think was she should still be a toddler. She’s starting to show some independence, but she still likes hanging out with her family. She actually taught me how to do diamond art a few weeks ago. We spent several hours of quiet bonding time working on our projects together. It was the best Saturday afternoon I’ve had in a long time. If only that would last forever!

My youngest grandchild is starting kindergarten this year. Now, that really makes me feel old. That child should still be a baby, bouncing on my knee. Instead, he’s a rough and tumble cowboy. He loves all things farming, and he’d be happy to spend his every waking moment on a tractor. While I enjoy watching him learn new things, the rate at which he is growing up is startling.

In the blink of an eye, I fear my three grandkids will be in college and far too busy for Papa and Nana. I want them to succeed in life, but I wish they would take their time.

Grandma always told me that time passes more quickly the older you get. She was right about so many things. I wonder how much more wisdom she would have shared with me if she hadn’t passed away when I seven.

I plan to share my seeds wisdom with my grandchildren for many years to come, whether they are receptive to it or not. They may one day benefit from lessons I learned the hard way.
