2026 Ozark Creative Writers Conference is in the Books

I hope you all aren't tired of reading about my writerly activities. 'Tis the season for conferences and events.

Last weekend, I attended the Ozark Creative Writers Conference (OCW) in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. It's held every year at Inn of the Ozarks, a beautiful venue. Though the roads are appropriately marked "crooked and steep", the drive is beautiful.

I can't express how much OCW means to me. Everyone is friendly and welcoming. If I get turned around or confused, as I sometimes do, someone is always willing to point me in the right direction. Kind words, hugs, accolades, and applause are commonplace.

I've been asked why I attend so many writers conferences. The answer is simple. They are fun, educational, and great opportunities to network with other authors. It's amazing what you can learn while sitting at a dinner table with seven other people who share your passion for the written word.

From leads on editors to robust debates regarding AI, a writers conference is the place to be for keeping your pulse on the industry. I have learned more about writing and publishing from conferences than I ever even hoped to learn from all of my years in college.

The speakers are knowledgable and always willing to answer questions. Sessions are relevant to our writing journeys and careers. The board members are encouraging and work extremely hard to make certain we all get the most out of our time together.

One hot topic amongst the writer crowd is scams. Unscrupulous predators are everywhere. I receive at least six emails and a couple phone calls a week inviting me to be interviewed on syndicated talk shows, appear on podcasts, be featured in book clubs, and participate in marketing blitz. Most of these are scams, even though a few appear legitimate at first glance. I am not alone. Every writer with whom I visited has experienced the same barrage.

With the assistance of AI, it has become incredibly difficult to separate the chaff from grain. That's why it's important to educate ourselves and learn how to stay safe both personally and financially in this day and age. Discussing the matter with other authors and attending educational sessions on the topic are more valuable than a month's worth of online research.

One of the things I love about OCW is entering the writing contests. Out of 34 contests, I entered 11 this year. Please keep in mind that some of those who enter have appeared on bestseller lists. I have not even come close to such a list with either of my books. That's why I'm honored to have won two 2nd Place, one 3rd Place, and one 1st Honorable Mention. I am thrilled with those wins!

I firmly believe my writing has improved as a direct result of attending writers conferences such as OCW. Spending time with my tribe, or those who share my passion if you prefer, rejuvenates me and provides me with the knowledge and skills to improve my craft.

I hope you all follow your passion!
