I’m honored to be a part of Missouri’s Emerging Writers. I wrote “My Ugly Chair” when I was in high school. It’s about an incident that happened when I was in kindergarten. I’m glad I wrote about it while I was still young enough to remember it clearly because the details have faded a little with age.
My high school Creative Writing teacher, Mrs. Walther, was impressed with the story and told me that I should pursue publication. I submitted “My Ugly Chair” to a few publications back then, but it lacked the polish to be accepted. I’ve always loved the story, though. It reminds me of the sweet innocence of my childhood.
Fast forward forty some years, and I found my story in an old trunk. I could barely read it due to it being an old mimeograph copy. Mrs. Walther made copies of our best stories for the entire class. I typed it into a Word document and revised the work, which was a bit rough. It was painfully obvious that I’d written it when I was 17 or 18 years old.
I’m so happy that I will be able to share “My Ugly Chair” with the world. My kindergarten teacher will probably get a kick out of the story, too. She’s a friend of mine now, and we’ve discussed the event a few times. She doesn’t remember it at all, but I will never forget the valuable life lesson she bestowed upon me.
