In the wake of natural disasters such as Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, it’s difficult to decide how to best help those affected. I’ve donated money to a couple different relief organizations, but I never feel very connected when I do that. That’s why I was thrilled to discover that a local school district has partnered with the school system in Lumberton, TX, which suffered devastating flooding due to Hurricane Harvey. Lumberton is a city with a population of approximately 12,000 people.
Carl Junction Schools, which happens to be my alma mater, are collecting supplies to send on a 53-foot semi trailer. The truck is on loan from Contract Freighters Inc., another local company. They have donated the use of their truck for the trip to Texas. A volunteer will drive the donated supplies in the donated truck straight to Lumberton ISD.
I don’t have children in the Carl Junction School district, but I have a good friend who teaches science there. A couple coworkers and I purchased some supplies that I’m dropping off at my friend’s house. She’ll take them to work with her, and they will be loaded up and hauled to Texas.
For those who live close to Carl Junction and want to contribute, donations are being accepted through September 15, 2017 at the offices in each school. Lumberton ISD is needing several cleaning supplies such as cleaning wipes, vinegar, laundry soap, and hand sanitizer. They also need Kleenexes, baby wipes, back packs, dry erase markers, glue, lunch boxes, 3-ring zip binders, and 5-subject spiral notebooks.
I’m not donating a vast amount of supplies, but knowing where the things I am donating end up makes me feel more connected to those I’m trying to help. It’s more personal for me now. I truly appreciate Carl Junction Schools and CFI for making it easy to make a difference. I’m proud to have such fine organizations in my community.
Natural disasters have a way of making us put our differences aside and focus on helping each other. I think as a nation we would do well to continue this behavior in our everyday lives. I also think that our political leaders could learn from this example of humanity at its finest.
