Celebrating Mom

Mother's Day is coming up next week, and I have a special post planned. I'm going to spotlight Author Daine Yates, who has written a couple of books about her mother's life. This special post will go live on May 12, 2024.

I can think of no finer way to honor moms everywhere than to write about them. I have written several memoir pieces featuring my mom. My favorite is the story of her reaction to the time I snuck a chicken egg home in our travel trailer and then forgot about it. That was one rotten egg by the time Mom found it a few months later.

I also wrote about her incredulousness when I told my grandma she made the best elderberry jelly when Mom had made it. While my little exaggeration thrilled Grandma, Mom was more than a little upset with me. While I was focused on making my grandmother happy, I hurt my mom's feelings, which was never my intention.

Mom taught me a plethora of lessons, but two stand above the others. She taught me to think for myself and stand on my own. Thanks to her, I'm not afraid to travel by myself, make my own choices, or keep my own company. I even had the courage to pursue my dream of becoming a writer.

I still remember her telling me, "You have to learn to take care of yourself because no one else will."

Her words were pure wisdom. There have been many times in my life when the only person I could count on was me. Mom gave me the tools to be able to stand on my own during tough times, as well as good times.

As I look back at her life after I came along, I see her growth and hard-won strength. There's no instruction manual that comes with being a mom. It's trial and error with a lot of prayer. If I were to ask, I'm certain she'd say she still worries about me and prays for me even now that I'm in my fifties.

There's nothing like a mother's love. Thanks for everything, Mom!
