The Impact of Heat and Humidity on Human Aggression and Anger Levels

It's hot here in Missouri! Our heat index reached 106 degrees in my neck of the woods today. Our local meteorologist forecasts it will be 90 degrees by 8:00 a.m. tomorrow.

I'm fortunate to work in an air-conditioned office, but I have worked, lived, and gone to school in non-air-conditioned buildings in the past. I'm not cut out for the heat or physical demands of factory work anymore, which is why I will continue to work in my cool office.


Not everyone has the luxury of air-conditioning. My heart goes out to those people. That said, I was yelled at twice by individuals who have no air-conditioning before 9:00 a.m. today. These folks were not my clients and weren't interested in anything I had to say. They seemed to only want to argue. Even after I promised to send one lady an application, she continued to yell. I'm truly not sure what she wanted from me.


This experience made me curious about how heat and humidity affect aggression and anger in humans, so I did a little research. I can't imagine that either one of those people from this morning are always so hateful and volatile, but they were both ready to spit nails.


When temperatures climb and the humidity rises, many people notice a shift in their mood. What starts as discomfort can quickly turn into frustration or even anger. This change is not just a coincidence. Research shows that heat and humidity can influence human behavior, often increasing aggression and irritability.
