I Wouldn't Want to Live Anywhere Else

My grandson is an avid soccer fan. He plays on a local youth team and follows the professional teams. He'll talk your ear off about his favorite players if you let him. The World Cup being here in the United States this year thrills him to no end. I'm happy it's here for another reason entirely.

I consider myself patriotic, but I'm as guilty as the next person about taking what we have for granted. That's why I love watching the videos on social media being made by our foreign visitors. Several of them have absolutely gushed about places like Walmart and Waffle House. While these are not my favorite places, they are always there. I can go anytime I like. Seeing them through the eyes of our visitors makes me see them in a new light.

I've watched videos of British folks extoling the excellence of our beverage sizes and food portions. The fact we can get to-go boxes blew a few minds. Personally, I wouldn't know how to act if I couldn't make an expensive restaurant dinner last for a couple of days thanks to a to-go box. That's just part of our culture.

We have a great deal of exciting things to enjoy in the United States. From Mesa Verde National Park in Colorado to Disney World in Florida, there is truly something for everyone. From the Space Needle in Washington to the Empire State Building in New York, our architecture is world class. I'm hoping to visit Yellowstone National Park in the next year or two, and I highly recommend going up to the top of the Space Needle.

I know our country isn't perfect, and there's a lot of political strife. That doesn't mean America isn't a wonderful place to live. If I don't like it here in Missouri, I am free to move any of the other forty-nine states whenever I wish. I can't imagine living anywhere else, though.

If I'm not happy in my career, I am free to switch gears and try something new. I've actually worked in several industries including manufacturing, retail/grocery, trucking, television, telemarketing, and community action.

My life is nothing fancy. However, I have access to clean water, safe transportation, a sturdy home, a variety of nutritious food, and education.

I don't think any country is perfect. There are many policies and rules with which I do not agree. That said, I'm proud to live here and wouldn't want to make my home anywhere else.
