Happy Independence Day!
I hope you're all celebrating with family and/or friends today. Barbeques, swimming, and fireworks are on the agenda for many today. I have no definitive plans other than sleeping late and not rushing to do a darned thing.
I have some holiday options, but the older I get, the more I just want to stay home. I could use the holiday for so many things. I could go spend some time with loved ones. I could get some serious writing time in because my husband is working. I could tackle one of several household projects that I need to start. I could also just relax with a good book and a tall glass of iced tea until time for fireworks. Maybe throw in some music.
I will probably do some of each of those things. I can set my tablet to read any book in my Kindle library aloud while I work on organizing the closet, cleaning my office, or any one of a dozen other things I need to do. Right now, I'm listening to a cozy mystery in which the main character runs a coffee shop. I have never drank so much coffee in my life as I have while listening to this book.
I may spend part of the day with family. Perhaps have some lunch followed by ice cold watermelon. Because I have to work tomorrow, I won't be staying up late to enjoy the fireworks. On the contrary, I will be taking a sleeping pill early in the evening, so the fireworks don't keep me awake. My coworker is taking Wednesday off, which means I will have much more work to do. I'm sure my boss would appreciate me being awake and alert for it.
I haven't forgotten the real reason for the holiday. We are celebrating our independence. I see it as a celebration of not only winning our freedom but maintaining it for over 200 years. I appreciate the people who have fought to keep us independent and those still fighting for freedom today. Our country isn't perfect. Far from it. Politics, economics, and all other issues aside, I'm proud to be an American.
I hope you'll all join me in a moment of contemplation to imagine what our lives would be like if we were not guaranteed the freedoms promised by our Constitution. We can work to fix the things that need changed because we're free to do so.
Happy July 4th, everybody!
