A Puppy? At My House? I was Not Prepared.

My world has been turned upside down by a pint-sized pooch. My husband brought home a puppy last Monday. I knew she was coming to live with us, but I was woefully unprepared for how much work a puppy is.

I had a puppy for a very short time when I was little, but he was an outside dog. He was also hyper aggressive and went to live at a salvage yard as their guard dog. I'm sure he was a great one because he terrified me.

That small experience in no way prepared me for the furry hurricane that has taken over my home. We named her Coco. She's a black and brown Chihuahua who demands to be held and loved on. She insists on interactive playtime and has almost mastered fetch. When I throw a toy, she runs to get it, but she usually takes it to her bed instead of back to me. We're working on it.

We have no idea how old she is. She was found abandoned and captured my hubby's heart. Her vet appointment is Friday, and we'll find out more about her then. I'm estimating her to be three to six months old.

Ursula, my cat, has been extremely patient with our new pup. She has only popped our newcomer a couple of times, and that was in defense of her food bowl. My kitty girl has been playing it cool and aloof, but she's not happy. I can tell by the way she stares at us and watches with a such look of dismay as Coco runs laps around the house.

Coco is a sweet pooch who chews on everything. She actually ripped my blanket off me and took off running with it to her bed Saturday night. I've no doubt she would have torn it to pieces if I hadn't been in hot pursuit.

Her energy is ferocious, but when she cuddles up to me and crashes, she is completely angelic. With a sweet personality, I think she'll be a terrific addition to our family once she's calmed down. Until then, I've learned to not leave my shoes unattended, guard Ursula while she eats her cat food, and watch where I step in case there are puppy bombs in my path.

As I write this, Coco is barking furiously at her chew bone. She has dragged it across the living room floor several times and finally decided to yell at it. If my house survives this little typhoon intact, I will be amazed. In the meantime, I'm getting my exercise chasing Coco. The cuddles make it all worth the chaos.
